Today we’re focusing on teen dating violence. Although February is #TeenDatingViolenceAwarenessMonth, it’s important to talk about it during #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth. Teen dating violence includes physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, and/or digital violence. Only 1/3 of the teen who were involved in an abusive relationship confided in someone about the violence. October is #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth. Research has shown that most people know someone who is currently experiencing or has experienced #DomesticViolence but many people do not know how to intervene. With around 70% of people reporting that they would intervene if they knew how to, it’s important for people to have access to bystander trainings and interventions. Many college campuses implement bystander interventions but there is little advertisement of those for the general public. @nomoreorg has great information and tips for bystanders on how to intervene and teams up with organizations and universities around the country to spread awareness. #DomesticViolenceAwareness #IntimatePartnerViolence

#Repost @janaillustration ・・・ While it seems like a completely harmless act for many, dressing up as another ethnicity or race is incredibly offensive and disrespectful. Especially in the US we are talking of people that have been slaughtered, exploited and oppressed - yet it's somehow okay to take those parts of the culture that we think are fun or entertaining, disregarding literally everything else. Native American themed costumes are flying off the racks every Halloween. Yet we choose to not see that Native American regalia is an expression of ones tradition, culture and identity, and it carries spiritual meaning. Some items are considered sacred, yet we just take it for our amusement without thinking about it twice. Worst one even: Making it into a sexualized costume, the "Sexy Indian Girl". When you think about that Native American women are sexually assaulted twice as often as the national average - 1 in 3 - you will see that dressing up like this is not a harmless activity. When a costume is based on race, ethnicity, or culture, humans are being extracted for the sake of making the wearer of the costume feel powerful, or exotic. Cultural appropriation at its best- members of a dominant group exploiting the culture of a less privileged group, belittling the lived experience and ethnicity. 🚫 Next Halloween, Carnival, theme party or whichever, I want you to rethink your costume choices. I also want you to rethink the way you take from other cultures and ethnicities in general: Do you only use what you enjoy (tattoos, hair styles, clothing, music, ...) but don't give a shit about marginalized groups any other given day?
