On September 14th and 15th we had the opportunity to attend the NC Sexual Health Conference (NCSEXCON). This year’s theme “Sexual Health Equity” was inspired by Dr. Cornell Wright’s closing keynote speech at last year’s conference. He defined sexual health equity as “an approach to the state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality that embraces fairness in the promotion, education, awareness, and practice of sexual relationships and sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, bias, prejudice and violence”. This year we had the pleasure of serving on the planning committee with a great group of sex geeks and cool peeps.
There were several awesome and informative sessions such as:
How Does Your Garden Grow? Planting and Nurturing Seeds of Healthy Sexual Development
The Mystery and History of Medical Mistrust in Black Communities
STAY WOKE: Sexual Violence Education is NOT One Color
Being Real About Being White: Reconciling Your Whiteness in Racial Justice and Sexual Health
Implicit Bias and Barriers to Contraceptive Access
We also had fun with Melanie from the Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health. If you have not had a chance to check them out please do. The offer great professional development opportunities, resources, and have an amazing store full of toys like the ones below.
Lastly, The Minority Sex Report was the recipient of the 2017 Sexual Health Equity Rising Star Award! Receiving this award means so much to us as we strive to create safe spaces for people of color to learn about sex and sexuality and provide representation in sexuality education. Thanks to Tanya Bass and the entire planning committee for surprising and honoring us. We couldn’t wait to run to our seat to text our mamas.
